For a considerable time the Napier Park Club had a big struggle to make their meetings pay, but the total isator figures for the last few meeting have shown an increase, which suggests that the club are out of the bush. Serene, which was ridden by H. Gray, was a big tip for the Trial Hack Handicap at the Napier meeting on Saturday last, but third place was the' closest he could fill. When Serene occupied a similar position at the Dannevirke meeting a couple of weeks 'ago j he was paying over £3OO to win! Jovial i s putting up a. fair record over jumps, and as he carries weight well, he may win again soon, for he is a quick and clean fencer. This gilding was credited with running the one and a half miles over, fences at Napier Park in the fast time of 2.43 4-5 —a time that would not give the oldtimp. hurdler much chance to size up his jumps. Evidently the course of hurdle racinp that Merry Singer ay as indulged in during the Avinter has not impaired his pace, for at Napier Park on Saturday last the son of Merry Moment wa? credited Avith running the ten furlong; in the fast time of 2.75.
