MANAIA TOWN BOARD.
NEW MEMBERS MEET. The first meeting of the newlyelected Manaia Town Board was held last night, this being a special meeting to elect a chairman and the various committees. Commissioners V. H. Hobday, J. A. G. -Cosgrove, «j. Hickey, L. G. Neilson, N. C. Innes, S. H. Greaves, and C T. W. Jones attended. The Town Clerk (Mr W. J. Radley) at first, and congratulated the old members on their re-election and welcomed the new, members. Ci\ Lines proposed Cr. Nielson as chairman, being the oldest member of the Board. Or, Hobday seconded. Or. Jones proposed Or. Hickey and Or. Cosgrove seconded. Or Cosgrove mentioned Cr. Hickey’s gieat work , on the Works Committee. He also had a great deal of spare time. He was not reflecting on Cr. Nielson, \a hoi a\ as a man for AA'hom the speaker had the greatest respect. The rmhtmail should be, .of course, Cr. Innes,-. the tormer deputy-chairman, but since he had proposed Cr. Nielson h e evidently was not seeking re-election. Mr CraAvford Watson ivas appointed scrutineer to the ballot. Oh a ballot being taken, Cr. Nielson Avas elected by four votes to. three. On taking the chair he thanked'Crs, tor their confidence, and stated that he ivould do- his best in the future as in the past. (Applause). Or. 'Hickey congratulated Cr. Nielson on his win, and assured him of liis .support. _i the motion of Cr. Hobday, Cr. Hickey was appointed deputy-chairman, Cr. Imies seconding. Or. Hickey moved that the Avhole be a finance committee. / Cr. Hobday, did not agree, since a large committee Avas unwieldy. . O' l *. Innes seconded and it Avas carried. ■ Crs. J ones,* Hickey and Innes ivere elected a Avorks committee, on the motion of Cr. Hobday. Crs. Hickey and Jones ivere appointed a Domain Committee’. Futher appointments were:— Reserves Committee.—Crs. Innes and Hickey. Cemetery Committee.—The chairman and Cr. Greaves. Hall and Lighting.—Crs. Cosgrove, Hobday and Greaves. Library.—Cr. Cosgrove. Band.—Cr. Jones. Fire Brigade—Crs. Innes and Hickey. It ivas decided not- to appoint a Avater and sewerage committee, it being considered that the works committee could deal with all matters in that direction. The matter of the date of meeting provoked some discussion, Ors Hickey and Hobday being in favour of meeting in the day time, Or. Innes objecting on the ground that the Crs. ivere all busy men. Cr. Innes moved that the meeting be every first Thursday in the month at 7.30 p.m.—Cr. Cosgrove seconded.— Carried. The chairman requested all committees to render a written report to each meeting. Or. Hobday agreed, saying that a written report could always be referred to. ‘Or. Innes did not approve of the idea. •’c Town Clerk: It is done in every local body In New Zealand. Cr. Jones said that it would mean too much work. Each member would want a private secretary. Cr. Hickey also said it would mean too much, time taken up. The Works Committee’s report was embodied in theforeman’s report. Cr. C-osgrove said that by a. written report the foreman would have explicit instructions. The chairman said that sometimes, owing to the protracted meetings, frequently matters were forgotten and not dealt- with, and a written report would obviate this. The clerk said that in every .other place it was done, and it would assist him materially. Any two members and the treasurer were empowered to sign cheques. Or. CosgroA r e spoke a Avord of congratulation to the old. board on their good work, and moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the late chairman and members. —This was carried by acclamation, and the meeting terminated. . .
