TAWHITI CROSSING
From time to time we have drawn attention to the frequent holding up of traffic at, the Tawhiti crossing, and last month a paragraph, was published in the Star giving particulars of- one such hold up. The paragraph has been the subject of enquiry by the Department, and at last night’s meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce a letter w r as received from the GeneralManager stating that “it would appear that the newspaper report in the matter was exaggerated.” The General Manager is entitled to his opinion, but we have shown the report of his statement to the member of our staff who -wrote the paragraph, and he emphatically denies that the facts were exaggerated. The road is frequently blocked for some minutes, and though we fully appreciate the Department’s difeulty, it is no use denying the fact that, people are inconvenienced through the delays. The cure is, of course, to build the neiv station and make provision for yards of sufficient, capacity to handle the trains without having to interrupt. traffic, on a busy road, and, as the Minister of Railways has. stated that Hawera stands high on the list of places requiring a new station and yards, w 7 e hope that the matter w r ill bo kept prominently before the Department.
