BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Sept. 26, 10.20 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 25. liie Star publishes a sensational story of the purchase of British submarines and the enlistment of British to assist the Riffs against the Spaniards, and states that Abdel Krim, Riff leader, has been financed tor months by a Franco-British syndicate, which advanced £500,000 in exchange for concessions in the Riff country iwhen the Spaniards were expelled. Ajbdel Ivrim, conceiving the idea of cutting the Spanish sea communications, the syndicate bought for £30,000 two old -submarines fronT a North England armament firm in the name of a Middle East Power. In order to preveiit the British Government’s intervention the negotiations for the purchase were carried out by a mysterious Riff delegate who is a Scotsman, a 1 daring professional soldier, and Abdel Ivrim’s adviser throughout the Spanish wai. He speaks Arabic like a native. He,fought in' France with the Scots Greys, and is now Staying at a West End hotel. Another Riff delegate is a British ex-naval officer, who by offering 30s 6d per day and a big gratuity when the war ended, enlisted submarine crews from among unemP lo yed ex-naval officers; who were leady for anything provided the money was good and the job exciting. Abdel Jvrim has also obtained. a number of machine guns and aeroplanes, manned 03’ British ex r officers and ex-pilots.— Sydney Sun Cable.
