The death of Mrs. Lenora Deborah ! Francis, at Point Chevalier, at the age of 93, removes another old and highly respected colonist. It also recalls the wreck of the schooner Fair Tasmanian over sixty years ago on the Victorian coais't, when Mrs. Francis and her family narrowly escaped drowning. Mrs. Francis, who was a. daughter of Mr. Thomas Harvey, of Fowey, Cornwall, was born in 1831. At the age of 26 she went to Australia, where she married Captain William Francis, whom she accompanied on several voyages. It was during one of these that ishe, with her family, narrowly escaped disaster in the Fair Tasmanian, of which Captain Francis had command. When the vessel was blown ashore, Mrs. Francis and her daughter attempted to land in a. boat, which was capsized before she got in. The crew were thrown into the water, and the little child was torn from a sailor’s grasp, but she was washed on to the beach unhurt. Meanwhile. Mrs. Francis attempted to land by means of a hawser. Only by cutting off her bair, which became entangled m the block, did she reach land safely. Mr. and Airs. Francis came to New Zealand in 18(5(5, living for some time in Dunedin and Nelson. They later resided at Kaipara. where Mr. Francis was harbourmaster at Kaipara Heads, and at Aratapu. For many years Mrs. Francis resided at Auckland, and enjoyed good health until shortly before her death. Her husband predeceased her some years ago. COULD NOT BE PERSUADED.
