SERIOUS OFFENCE.
FALSE STATEMENT BY WOMAN,
(by TELEGRAPH —PREBB ASSOCIATION.',
WELLINGTON, Sept, 24. The ease of a widow convicted at Christchurch of making false statements when applying for a pension was mentioned in the House to-day by Mr H. T. Armstrong (Christchurch East), but the Minister for Justice (Hon. C. J. Parr) said lie had no particulars of the ease.
Mr Armstrong complained of the severity of the sentence of three years’ probation, and the order to repay £7B obtained m pension because the woman happened to be earning nine shillings a day when the pension was obtained.
The Minister said the conviction was for making a false statement, which he regarded as serious. As to repayment, that was a matter the Department might take into consideration later. ■
