EGMONT PARK.
FUNDS INSUFFICIENT. The affairs of the Egmont National Park were discussed at the monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council on Saturday. Councillor Anderson pointed out the difficulties under which the board was working. The funds were absolutely insufficient. There was at present a Bill, before the House, but although, it was good in certain directions it did not go as far as desirable from a financial point of view. There was provision for the Rasing of certain lands, but nothing for the raising of money by means of the sale of timber. He. personally was not in favour of trees being cut down. That should not he done unless provision was made for replanting, and not in all cases even then. Councillor Pitt thought the Department should grant the board a satisfactory subsidy. The timber should not be interfered with. There were two power boards, in the district whose operations depended upon the rainfall. There was no doubt that the standing bush played an important part in connection with the rainfall. He moved that the attention of the Forestry League be drawn to the fact that the subsidy to the board was not sufficient to permit of its properly performing its functions.—Carried.
