STRANDED VESSEL.
EVIDENCE AT INQUIRY. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. I CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 22. At an inquiry this morning into the stranding of the steamer Wakatu. near Kaikoura, on September 5, Albert Piggott, A. 8., said he was at the wheel from 4 atm. to 6 a.m. It was a dark morning a.nd misty. He received no instruction to alter the course. David Robinson said that he was in command when the vessel struck. There was a thick mist. When he last saw Cape Campbell light the vessel; would be four or five miles away. He did not then take the compass hearing. He didn’t think it necessary when lie coulcl sec the light. He thought he was -six miles off land when the vessel struck. The captain said that the only leason lie could give for the vessel getting out of her course was that she had been carried inshore ’by a strong easterly.
