GLOAMING FAILS AGAIN

BY CABLE CRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYRIGHT Tllo p . , ... SYDNEY, Sept. 21. J-Jie Rosehill races were held yesterday in, glorious weather and the‘tracks were in good condition and fast. The attendance was very large. It was a day of surprises and regards and the New Zealand horses figured prominently. Nigger Minstrel accounted for the Guineas, with Bonaparte third. while in the Hill Stakes t Zealand horses filled all the places. In the first division of the Higliweight .Handicap Bosh took second honours, and Director occupied a,' similar position in the second division. With Heroic scratched from the Guineas, what was regarded as Nigger Minstrel’s strongest opponent washout of the way, and the New Zealander won handsomely pulling up by four lengths. The time was 1.53, equalling the course record. Nigger Minstrel after the race shoived slight lameness, and it is understood a strained muscle is responsible

Gloaming’s'defeat in the Hill Stakes was the result of bad luck and caused mucli disappointment. • Holding a good position at the top of the straight, Gloaming got blocked when just making his run at the St. Leger stand and had to be eased up. Gloaming lost ground, and Ballymena, making the most of the opportunity, dashed in front. Gloaming, getting clear, made a great effort to retrieve his position, and wa s beaten by half a neck only. The time (1.384) equalled the course record. The principal results are :

Guineas—Nigger Minstrel (A. Reed) Solidify (A. Lewis) 2, Bonaparte (Con Reed) 3. Thirteen starters. Valamite made - the early running and Nigger Minstrel moved into second place. Once in the straight Nigger Minstrel took command, and clearing away from the field, won easily by four lengths. Solidify beat Bonaparte bv two lengths. Time, 1.53.

Hill Stakes.—Ballymena 8.11 (Medley) 1, Gloaming 9.0 (G. Young) 2. The Hawk 9.0 (Pike) 3. Six starters. They jumped oft in line. Braehead soon took charge and made the pace to the halfmile from Bedonia, The Hawk; Gloaming, Serelot, and Balylmena, the straight being entered in the 'same order: A little later Gloaming was blocked and had to go round the field. Ballymena, coming fast, headed Braehead a furlong from home and lasted long enough to beat Gloaming’s great effort by half a neck. The Hawk was two lengths away.’ Time, 1.38 f. Maiden Plate, one mile and one- fur-tong-—Tactician (A. McCormack) 1, Son o’ Mine 2, Arch Amie 3. Also started: Kendal, Transformer, Marble Boy, Winkie’s Wheel, Vice Versa, Passionate, Wandstar, Cohesion, Parodist, Exactly, Herculean. Landslide and Pelham were the pacemakers, and that pair were racing stride for stride all the way up the back and into the straight, where the field closed up rapidly. OTAKI. Sept. 21. The weather was glorious and the attendance large for the opening day of the Otaki meeting yesterday. The course was heavy. Results: . Hurdles.—Koauau 1, Bonibrook 2, Goldpiece 3. Crowhurst, Wa-imatao also started, but fell. Power, the rider of Waimatao, injured his hand. Koauau led most of the distance, winning by three lengths, with several lengths between second raid third. Time, 2.56. Maiden Plate., —Westbroke 1, Salamis 2, Miss Hupana 3. Scratched: Gold Dollar, Otauru, Beumont, Haze and Pa-donna. From the start Westbroke led and was never headed. Won by a neck after a fine finish, with a neck between second and third. Time, 1.45. Katihiku Hack Handicap.—Glarinda 1, Star Ranger 2, Waetea 3. Scratched: Opa, Asleep, Otauru and Lipsol. Glarinda led throughout and won by a length, with half a length between second and third. Gluement wa-s fourth in it fine race between the placed horses. Time, 1.31 4-5. Memorial Stakes.—Sunart 1, Kilfaire. 2, Tanadees 3. Rouen and Megan were scratched. Hyrax made all the running ajid continued to lead nearly to the posty when the placed horses came from the ruck and fought out a fine finish, Sunart winning by half a length, with the same distance between second and-third. Waitawa Handicap.—Rose of Athens 1, Lady Fingers 2, Last Crust 3. Scratched: Counter Attack and E litre Nous. From the start'Lady Finders led, followed by Rose of Athens. Scratched Peach Brandy, Kilia and ldanoo.-Prom the start Bonena went to the front and led most of the distance until displaced by Bonifant, who, however fell back beaten fifty 'yards from home.
