NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By Maecenas.)
Mountain Signal finished very close up to the “placed” division on the second day at Wanganui, and this after a particularly bad run. On this form Mountain Signal should do well at Otaki. Opa is like]v to give most trouble.. At the Grand National meeting at Ricoarton Sunart was produced twice, and on each occasion ran sterling races. A reproduction 'of this form will find Sunart particularly hard to beat in the chief race at Otaki meeting to-morrow (Saturday), Lady Gay is galloping well at Trenthain, and should she come through the Dannevirke meeting all right she should run, well afc Otaki, as her opponents are not by any means a good lot. • Although she failed to secure anj stake money at the last Canterbury meeting. Rose of Athens ran well, and at Otaki will have a big advantage in condition as compared with her opposition, so on these grounds may be well supported. If reserved for the Taumaka Welter at Otaki to-morrow Opa will take no end of heating, for at Wanganui she was galloping over everything when she ran a close third on the opening day there. Miss Mickey gave such an excellent exhibition over the battens at Wanganui on Saturday last that should she strip well at Avondale to-morrow the daughter of Spalpeen should be the favourite. Star Ranger is moving well in bis Avork just, nmv and is expected to shove up at Otaki meeting. Although the programme has not yet been decided on, the Stratford Racing Club are going to increase the stake money by £SOO for their coming meeting. Since their last meeting the Stratford Racing Club have.spent a lot of money in course improvements, and by the time the next meeting arrives the value of these will be appreciated.' The Lamb- gave the leaders a big start in his race on Saturday last at Wanganui, and judging by the ground he made up on the field, it certainly looks as if the owner of this gelding Avas very unlucky in not securing the prize.
As'Musketoon Avill strip the most seasoned horse in the Avondale Cun field, and knoAving he stays Avell and lias pace, the betting public must give the imported horse a second to none chance in that rich race. Had Lady Cavendish been more seasoned Avhen produced for the Debutante Stakes at the recent Wanganui meeting it certainly looks as if she Avould have AAgm, for she showed a ■ great burst of speed over the last chain or so. Lady Cavendish is engaged in the Avondale Stakes to-morroAV, and although it if claimed that some of the northerners can gallop, she wilt make them do their best.
The spring meeting of thei Avondale Jockey Club opens to-morrow and concludes on Monday next. As a number of horses that competed, at the Wanganui meeting are engagedi at the Otaki meeting, which opens on •Saturday, bettors rnay hold their own. if form is closely folloAved.
Although Goldpieee failed at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting he has shown promising form, and it would come as no surprise should the molding do well in the hurdle races at the Otnki meeting. What a fine horseman over jumps W. Bowden is. A|. the Taranaki Hunt Club meeting, and also on the first day of the Wanganui meeting, Miss Mickey jumped very carefully and lost lengths at each fence, but on the second day at Wanganui, with Bowden in the
saddle, the daughter of Spalpeen gavo a splendid exhibition. _ Last season Tamatete’s brother, Padonna, showed great pace when he ran second to Killocra in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. After this Padonna went amiss and was not again produced. He appears amongst those entered for the Maiden Plate at Otaki, and if produced Padonna will touch ashort price. Westbroke, after Marton form, may beat the others.
