GOLF.
THE AMATEUR CHAMPION
ELTHAM’S WELCOME
When Mr L. Quin returned to Eltham on Monday his club members and a large number of friends -were on the station to welcome him. When he alighted, from the train the band played “See the conquering hero comes,” and the champion was carried shoulder high under an arch of golf clubs held by members of the club.
Formally welcoming him, the president of the club (Mr H. D. Forsyth) said it gave: him very great pleasure, on behalf of the players and the residents generally, to welcome home Mr Quin as the amateur golf champion of New Zealand. They were all very proud of the distinction Mr Quin had won, and they gladly welcomed him back, knowing and . appreciating how much the Quin family had done for the game of golf in Eltham. They hoped he would retain his good form, and that next year he would be able successfully to defend his title against allcomers. Three cheers were then given, and this was followed by the singing of “For he’s a jolly good fellow.” Mr Quin, in reply, said he was very pleased at the warm welcome home from so many good friends. Speaking of the match, he said the semi-final had been a good game, but he felt confident all the time he could win it. In the final he was m good form all the way, and had no misgivings from the start. He could assure his friends he would do his best to retal*i the title, and hoped to be again successful next year.
Mr Quin was then escorted to the centre of the town by a procession of golfers, headed bv three members of the Eltham Pipe Band.
