KAPONGA SOCCER CLUB
SMOKE CONCERT. The- Oddfellows’ Hall, Kaponga, was well filled on Friday evening bv the gathering in attendance at the smoke concert and social arranged unde,r the auspices of the Kaponga Association Football Club. In .addition to a large number of enthusiasts of' the Soccer code, including local supporters and visitors from contemporary clubs, representatives of' other branches of athletic sport we,re present. Mr AY. Adams, president of the Taranaki Football Association, occupied the chair. , ‘The-''Julian Cup, secured by the club as the Taranaki champions for the season; iust concluded and also the cup won at the seven-a-side tourney under the auspices of the Manaia Hibernian Sports Club, were presented, and a short toast list, interspersed with some interesting items of song and story, was arranged, further enjoyment being reaped '.throngh the opportunity provided for the exchange of reminiscences and opinions relating to the field of sport.- ! The function, which was the first of:.*its kind organised by the club, achieved a succegs which should result in its institution as an. annual fixture.
. Following the loyal toast, an apology fo,r absence, received from the club captain, §j|r F. Nichqlls, was read. .
Football Association” was p|qjposed by- Mr C. E. Betts, president irt‘ the Kaponga Club, and responded to by Mr C. Gumings, the associatfoSi secretary. In presenting the Julian Cup, Air Adams/*- congratulated the Kaponga Club mt the excellent record maintained during the season. Out of ten games played, Kaponga had won seven, drawn two and lost one, and the goals registered registered were more than double the number scored against- them. Air Atlams said that during recent seasoniv he • had taken great interest in the', progress of the Kaponga players, arid was pleased that they had justified his opinion of. their prowess, and hatd achieved the success which he himselfriiad predicted. Air E. C. Betts (president), who, in the absence of the captain, accepted •the cup, thanked Ivfr Adams for his courtdfths remarks,, and said that ,the 1924 season was the third occasion on Kaponga. Club had won the cup, tpe first being in 1909, when the club were unbeaten, and the second in 1912. /The club would naturally make every endeavour to hold tlie trophy in the ,1925 season, but in the event of their losing it would be the first to congratulate the successful players. The .presentation of the Manaia. Hiberniaix- Sports Club’s seven-a-side cup was made by Air AV. J. AlcMahon, who said that' the Kaponga representatives great credit for their exposition a|ytlie tournament, and also for the standard of sportsmanship they displayed throughout the season. Air Betts received the cup, making suitable response.
