Mr J. R. Corrigan, M.P.; was a passenger by the mail train south this morning.
Mr S. E. Curry, who lias beeh laid aside with illness for some time past, is reported to-day to be improving. The many friends of Mrs. J. Mordison, Opimake Road, will regret to hear of the death of her y father, Mr. Robert Russell Bruntori, of Otaio, South Canterbury, who died: at sea while returning from a trip to i Scotland with Mrs. Brunton. Another of Auckland’s old residents passed away on Wednesday in the person of Mr. -Andrew Bruce .Fdtdyce, . at. the age of. 95! Born at Urist, in the Shetland Islands, in 1830, Mr." Fordyce had lived - under -the reign -of; four Sovereigns. ...•,- ; . Mr. Roy Coutts, the well-known Jnglewood footballer, was admitted to the New Plymouth public hospital on Friday suffering from ah attack ‘of diphtheria. Last night it was reported that he was making satisfactory progress. . : ■
Advice was received from Pukeora Sanatorium, under date of September 10, at the meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday' that Mr! H, T. Wilkinson, who lias' been under treatment there for some months, was reported to be much improved and to continue' to make much better progress. Miss Inez Bigg, of Stratford, who has been in that branch of the New Zealand Loan a t nd Mercantile Agency Co. for several y'.ears, has been appointed typiste to the Hawera Hospital Board. There were applications also from Hawera and Dannevirke.
On Saturday afternoon last, the staff of the Rangitikei Advocate assembled, “round the stone” for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr. E. M. Cope stake, who:.has taken up the position of Marton ‘ and Main Trunk representative of the Wanganui Herald. The presentation consisted of a ease of pipes, which, on behalf of the staff, was handed to Mr.. Copestake by the editor-manager. ' .Mi*. John Angus Dunning, B.Se., has been selected by the professorial board of the Auckland University Ctallese as the Auckland nominee for the Rhodes scholarship for this vear. He was nominated last year. He is at present on the staff of the John McGlashan College at Dunedin. N.Z.M.C. arrived in New Plymouth last night to take part in the ceremony of unveiling the cenotaph this afternoon.
Mr. Christopher Leek, ex-Mavor of Newmarket, Auckland, died at his residence at Bemuer.a, ,on Tuesday, aged 70 years. Mr; Leek was bom m Herefordshire. In 1884 he arrived in Auckland and entered the Government railways '.service. He was stationed at Mercer, and there, with a small group of railwayman. took an' active part in organising the Amalgamated Society of Railway*.-, Servants. Mr. Leek eventually became signalman at Newmarket, .holding thit position for many years. On his retirement from the railway service in 1901, M’’- T-"?k took up public life and was for 20 years connected with the Newmarket Borough Council, serving as! Mayor from 1917 to 1921:
