NOTES ON THE SPORT
(By Telegraph.—From Maecenas). _ . WANGANUI, Sent. 12. r■ , s J J «! n S me «ting of the AVangaiiui Jockey Club opened in fine weather and before a good attendance, which included His Excellency and Lady Jellicoe and suite. As was only to be. expectea after a lot of 'recent rain., the track was not as fast as on many former occasions, but nevertheless was in good racing order. Betting was fairly brisk, showing a slight increase over that of the corresnonding dav last year.
Racing opened with the Putiki Hack, and m a good field Shining Armour was installed favourite, while Wlictunui also came in for good support, but Glenganff was neglected. When the barrier rose Taitaiata and Glengarilf began quickly, hut La Reve soon went to the front, only to give way, to Master Black, which piloted La Reve, Taitaiata, Sir Pan, Interest and Glengariff. Before turning into the straight. Mountain Signal took charge and led Master Black and Glen gar iff .into the straight. Over the last furlong a fine race took place, Glengarilf just winning from Mountain Signal and Opa. Knighthood was fourth. The field, both classically and numerically, was not good for'the Okehu Hurdles, and bettors made Crown Com the prime fancy, while Savory and Miss Mickey were also well supported. Demand was the early leatler. Then Te Tahi went out as pacemaker, and at the stand was just in front of Demand and Velociform. Going down the hack Yelociform and Demand took uo the running, but iyior jumping by the" leaders put Crowii Coin in charge, and thereafter he went on to. win easily from Velociform and Demand, with Te Tahi fourth.
There were several promising “maidens” included in those that contested the Maiden Race, and at the close of the betting Shut Eye (£650) was a good favourite from Papaponga (£475), but no other runner was seriously considered. Rangimoana was quickest out from Slump, Tatrina and Papaponga, but the favourite lost many lengths. At the half-mile post Bonogue had taken charge, and he led Papaponga and Shut Eye into the straight. Over the last furlong Bonogne ran on well to beat Papaponga by a half length, with Shut Eye and Rangimoana close up. For the Jumpers’ Flat Alaric claimed most friends, and the support was well placed, for always going well in behind Empyrean and Brigadier Bill, he drew out over the last portion of the race to win easily from Brigadier Bill and Hyrax, which pair fought out a good finish for the minor places. The Guineas field was not a large one, but the competitors were a promising lot. Inferno stripped well, and carried: just over £9OO against £6OO opposite The Banker’s number, and just 011 £6OO was entrusted to Gaillard. When the field had settled down from a good start Ilka was in front from Gaillard and Subjection. Turning up the back stretch Subjection got to the lead, with Gaillard, Motley, and Ilka following, but The Banker got sent back. Subjection led Gaillard. till three furlongs from the post. .Here Gaillard assumed control, and led Inferno and Ilka into the straight. From here on a capital race took place, Inferno running on well to win by a length from Ilka, who beat Gaillard by, a neck, with The Banker fourth.
For the Durie Hack Handicap, Barn Owl (£865) was a big favourite from •Muscari (£585) and Sunny Vale (£420). When the barrier rose Hukio, Lucrative, Te Kawa, and Fool’s Paradise began well, but at the end of a furlong The Lamb had got to the front. After passing the half-mile post Kuhio, Fool’s Paradise, liehutai and Solferange became prominent, but over the last furlong Fool’s Paradise drew out to win well from Lucrative, which only beat Rehxitai, with Solferange just clear of a bunched lot.
Campbell’s pair (Comical and Diamond Ping) were big favourites for the Marangai Handicap, while Winning Hit and Avola were the next best supported. The start was not a. good one, Halgina going out to lead Irapuka. and Yoma. Pounding into the back straight Yoma opened up a good lead over Halgina, Iranuka, and Diamond Ring, Two furlongs from the post Irapuka had gat- the lead, and he was in charge from Yoma, Avola, and Diamond Ring at the home turn. Over the last part Diamond Ring, vigorously
ridden by Gray, got up to beat Irapuka and Yoma. Avola was fourth. Racing concluded with the Flying, and in a good betting race Moore’s pair (Reremoana and Ladv Bentinck) hmshed up the choice of backers with £960. Rational (£700) and Delugo (£/3i» were well supported. Lady Bentuick began quickly, and she led iDelwge. l{oyal Dh'orce, and Soliform uou 11 tlie back, while Rational and Rer.emoana were many lengths awav. After passing the half-mile post Deluge took charge, and he went "on to win easily from Royal Divorce, who beat Lady Bentmck and the fast finishing Reremoana.
ROYAL DESPATCH CASE
Di 'QUALIFICATION REMOVED
BY CABLE —PR3BB ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, Sept. 11. ihe Jockey Club Committee, considered Mr. Knight’s appeal against the action of the stipendiary stewards in disqualifying Royal Despatch for 12 months, and announced late to-night tlia.t the committee had upheld the appeal and removed the disqualification of the horse.
The stewards’ decision caused consilerable surprise in racing circles, in view of the fact that- while they had held that Mr Knight was in no> way implicated they robbed him of the services of Royal Despatch. The committee's reversal of the stewards’ decision is regarded as doing nothing but justice, on the merits of the case.
NEWS OF DOMINION HORSES. SYDNEY, Sept. 11. Thirteen final acceptors for the Chelmsford Stakes include Gloaming, Ballymena, Director, and Bonaparte. The only one carrying a heavier weight than Gloaming is Rivoli with 9.11. The secretary of the Victoria Racing Club has written to Mr Greenwood, expressing a desire that Gloaming be sent to Melbourne for the cup meeting. Mr Greenwood is favourable to the journey if it is found possible. The horse’s future programme depends on his shaping in the Chelmsford Stakes. Nigger Minstrel was credited with the fastest time at this morning’s gallops at Randwick, doing *a seven furlongs sprint 011 the middle grass track m company with Ballymena. The first half-mile was covered in 49isec and the full distance in 1.28), the colt heating Ballymena by half a length. The performance is considered particularly good in view of the fact that rain had taken, 'the fire out of the track. Gloaming took 1.29). The Cypher has sufficiently improved to exercise and canter on the tracks. The strained tendon is again apparently normal, and it is hoped the horse will be able to fulfil Randwick engagements.
