Sir Joseph Ward, who has been on a visit to Australia, left Sydney yesterday by the Maunganui for Wellington.
Advice has been received that Dr. T. Haigh, examiner for the Associated Board of R.A.M. and R.C.M., London, who is now in the North Island, will be in Hawera on Thursday, September 25, and. will be here for two days. Dr. F. T. Bowerbank has resigned his position as Returned Soldiers’ Association representative on the War Pensions Appeal Board, and Dr. W. E. Herbert, of Wellington, has been nominated as successor.—Press Assn. Appointments to the Cook Islands public servfte gazetted are Dr. J. P. Donald, assistant medical officer, and Miss M. Mr R. H. Rockel, of the staff of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, has received six months’ leave of absence owing to. illness.
Mr George Baildon, the deputyMayor of Auckland, acceded to the request of a largedeputation that he should accept nomination as Sir James Gunson’s successor in the Mayoralty (says an Auckland telegram). At a special meeting of the Otago Hospital Board yesterday, Miss Mabel Thurston, matron of Pukeora Sanatorium, Waipukurau, was appointed matron of the Dunedin Hospital and director of nursing in the Otago distinct (says a Dunedin telegram). The Gazette notifies the appointment of Mr W. D. Hunt as a member of the Meat Producers’ Board representing the stock and station agents, and Mr T. A. Duncan and Mr Adam Hamilton representing the producers of meat for export.—Press Assn. T At a meeting of the committee of the New Plymouth Bowling Club on Wednesday evening a vote of sympathy in his illness, with hopes of a speedy recovery, was passed' to Mr W. Healy. who has been an inmate of the hospital for several weeks. Many old residents of South Taranaki will have learnt with much regret of the death yesterday of Mrs. Tinlady, of Okaiawa. one of the oldest settlers in that district. Much symnathv will bo felt with her relatives in their time of sorrow.
By a strange coincidence another erstwhile resident of Okaiawa, Mr. L. J. Walsdorff, who has been for some years at Ngaere, passed away on the same day at his home. Mr. Walsdorf was well known to .old residents, for he ran a earrving service between Okaiawa, Nonnanby and Hawera for several yearn, first by horse convevance, and later -by motor lorry. He was a keen lover of football and was an active and enthusiastic supporter of the Okaiawa Club. His death will be regretted by many friends all over the district.
