GOLF.

DOMINION TOURNAMENT

THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.

QUIN GOES TO SEMI-FINALS

(BY telegraph—press association.). AUCKLAND, Sept. 10. Beautiful weather conditions prevailed for the continuation of the New Zealand golf tournament to-day. Results:

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Third Round.

G. F. Gunson (Maungakiekie) defeated R. D. Wright (Auckland), 3 up and 2.

L. Quin (Eltham) defeated J. Harold (Wanganui), 5 up and 4. J. Goss (Wanganui) defeated J. L. Black (Hutt), 3 and 1. H. B. Lusk (Auckland) defeated A. E. Conway (Miramar), 5 up and 4. A surprise was caused by the defeat of Wright, the Auckland provincial champion, by Gunson, who is only 19. There was not much between the players in the morning. Gunson was one up, and he quickly increased it to 5 up at the turn. In the afternoon he played very steadily, and Wright made too many mistakes to catch him, Gunson winning 3 up and. 2. * Goss scored comfortably over Black. His lead was 6 up at lunch, and in tlie afternoon he maintained this until lie unaccountably went off his putting and lost three holes in succession. This left him 3 up at the lltli, hut he won the 12th and was 4 up again. Black took the next with a good putt and also tlie loth and the 16th, leaving Goss dormy two. The 17th was the deciding hole, Goss winning 3 and 1. Harold was quite off form in his match with Quin, and could do nothing right. He was 2 down in the morning, and the game ended at the 14th in the afternoon, Quin winning 5 up and 4. Lusk,' after being one down in the morning, played at the top of his form in the afternoon, and soon squared the match. He then ran to 3 up. At the sth Conway went off his game, and Lusk increased his lead to 5 up at the 11th and won 5 up and 4. A bogey handicap match played today resulted in a tie between' E. L. Bartleet and R, O. Gardner, 2 up. A medal handicap for professionals was won by R. C. Butlers with 149.

THE FLAY. GOSS BEATS BLACK. FINE PLAY BY L. QUIN. The match on which most general interest centred was that between Goss. last year’s champion, and Black, of the Lower Hutt. It is interesting to recall that- last year at Wanganui they met in the same round and that the result was the same as .yesterday. ft was felt that the winner would have a big say in the final. L. Quin again scored a. fine win after a good struggle. Neither he nor Harold could do much good in tlie morning, bqfc in the second round Quin improved very much, and playing nice straight long shots down the' fairway, ran out a< winner by a comfortable margin of 5 up and 4. Conway, of Miramar, was expected to go to' the finals, but Lusk, the veteran ex-champion, played up to his best form and disposed of his opponent fairly easily. The young Maungakiekie player, Gunson, scored an unexpected success by defeating such a doughty opponent as Wright, and is entitled to great credit for his good performance. _ The semi-finals will be played on Friday, to-day being an off day, and the final will be played on Saturday. L. Quin plays Gunson and Goss meets Lusk.

The. professional finals will he played to-morrow, Goss meeting Mclntosh. I nc icijTior has the greater experience but- Mclntosh is playing remarkably well, and with even luck should give ms opponent a great struggle. If both strike their best form the result will be very open.

Rain fell but not enough to affect the course, which is in excellent order, and reflects groat credit on the greenkeeper.
