CAPTAIN COOK.

SCENE 01' DEATH

SIR JOSEPH CARRUTHERS’

VISIT.

Mr. W Houston,' of Bondi, has received a letter from Sir Joseph Carruthers to the effect that he was about to leave Honolulu and go to Hawaii, the southermost island of the Hawaiian group. At this island, at “Kaawa•oa, ’ Kearakekua Bay, Captain James Cook, R.N., was killed by the natives, February 14, 1779. Sir Joseph added that he intended to proceed to Kaerakekua Bay, and place a wreath in the name of Australia- on the monument, which marked the place where Cook fell. The monument stood on a small plot of land, presented to the British Government by a late Hawaiian princess, and was put in place in 1874 by officers and men of HIM.S. Fantome. The inscription on the monument read as follows: “In memory of the great circumnavigator, Captain James Cook, R.N., who discovered these islands on the 18th Januar/, A.D., 1779. This monument was erected by some of his fellow countrymen.”
