HOCKEY.

LADIES’ TOURNAMENT FINAL.

(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) NELSON, Sept. 10.

The ladies’ hockey tournament was concluded this afternoon in beautiful weather, before a large attendance and on a fast ground, when Southland (holders) defeated Poverty Bay in the final by four goals to one. The winners gave a fine exhibition, passing with judgment and attacking and defending equally well. Southland was the cleverer team of the two, and though Poverty Bay fought hard they met a superior combination. In the first spell, although the game was fairly even, Southland lead bv three goals to nil, goals being scored by Misses Melvin, Ashley and Bell, Miss Ashley’s goal being a particularly brilliant one.

In the second spell Miss Hei sent the ball in for Poverty Bay, and in the last quarter of an hour, in which Southland dominated all play. Miss Ashley put the game beyond all doubt by sending in Southland’s fourth goal.
