RAILWAY SCHEME
TAUPO TO PUTARURU,
SATISFACTORY STAGE REACHED,

The prospects for building a railway from Taupo to Putaruru, whieh has been reported upon by a Royal Commission, has now reached a satisfactory stage as a result of negotiations between the Minister for Railways, the Railway Board and the Taupo Totara Timber Company, The last named oft fered nineteen miles of constructed railway to the. Board for £50,000, subject to the conservation of certain rights, and after considerable discussion the company made a further announcement. that it would raise no objection to the Board building the proposed line if it could be shown if would serve other timber interests in the district better than the company’s line. This concession is expected to go a long way towards disposing of the obstacles which have, held up the project for some years. The total cost of forty miles of new line and relaying the existing nineteen miles with 401 b. rails will be, roughly, £300,000.
