STATE ELECTION RESULTS
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, Sept. 9. A telegram from Portland, Maine, says the elections for the State Federal offices resulted in a decisive Democratic defeat, Republicans carrying the State by an excess of thirty-five thousand plurality of a total of 225,000 votes cast. This has encouraged the Republican leaders, because the Maine election, coming before other States, is generally regarded as a barometer of the nation-wide electoral inclinations. f?fee Ku Klux Klan issue complicated Maine’s gubernatorial election. Mr. Ralph Brewster (Republican), who had the Klan’s support, easily defeated Mr. William Pattangall, who. as a member of the resolutions committee of the Democratic National Convention, had vainly sought a plank denouncing the Klan by name. Mr. Pattangall’s defeat highly gratifies • the Republican leaders, who repeat the old cry of “the Klan no issue.”
