AN ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING

Tiie Ke Kiri hall was taxed to its utmost capacity on Friday evening .by the large assembly of members and other residents from all parts of the surrounding district in attendance at the. first social gathering held under the auspices of the newly-formed Te Kiri Scottish Association. Tlx© hall has seldom been the scene of such a largely-attended and enthusiastic gathering, and the outstanding social success realised in the venture should amply warrant its continuance as an annual event. The Scottish spirit, which n rev ailed throughout the evening, was admirably introduced when Pipers -3. Hamilton and A. Burrows, playing “The McKenzie Highlanders,’’ led the opening grand march, the u-pers subsequently providing music for the first waltz. Thereafter a greatly enjoyed dance programme, interspersed with numerous musical and vocgl.coni' ih:. lions, was arranged, the items of ‘■eng including well-known Scottish bal-l-ids, which, together with the skirl of the pines which* were hoard at intervals. were accorded a very popular reception . An attraction of special interest was afforded .by a competition in Highland fl'iig and Sheantriubus dances, some clever exhibitions necessitating fine discrimination by the judges (Messrs A. ’Burrows and J. Sutherland') being "iyen. In the first-named daii’ee, Jean Kirk Dorothv Clonston and Bonnie Boss received first,. second and third awards respectively. As the competition was for- the aggregate n dot? in both dances, the final award was therefore: Dorothy Clonston 1. •loan Kirk 2, Bonnie Ross 3. An award was also made to Joyce Hickman, the only‘entrant: in the juvenile class, open only to those who had not- previously competed.' The prizes were presented b ■' the - president of the association, Mr F A Collins, wln-v fittingly congratulated each recipient. Mr Collins also flanked all who. had contributed to the success of the evening, making special reference 'to the assistance given V’ the Indies who had supervised the simper arrangements, and also- to thrvalued services rendered by Mr N.
