CALF-REARING COMPETITIONS.

SOUTH TARANAKI. REPORT FOR YEAR 1923-24. N The judging of the calves entered for this competition took place in December of last year. The entries for the various breeds are given below, with last year’s figures in parenthesis for comparison: 1923-24—Calves judged, 133 (104); Jersey-Ayreshire, 111 (79); Shorthorn and Friesian, 22 (25). The judging was based on. the following scale of points: 110 for condition, 50 for cost,. 50 for chart. This differed from the scale used in the previous two years only by the reduction of the points allowed for “cost” from. 100 to 50. The average cost of rearing was slightly lower than for the previous year, as shown by the following figures (the figures for the previous year being given in parentheses):— 1923-24—Average cost, 16s 2*d (16s 10d); highest cost, £3 Is lOd (£2 2s 6d); lowest cost, 3s old (3s 6d). The figures for the various groups are as follows: Group No. Total cost Aver, cost judged £ s. d. £ s. d. 1 24 211010* 017114 2 28 20 11 U 014 8f 3 20 21 8 34 115 4 28 20 2 84 0 14 ; 44 o 33 33 17 7 1 0 64 As in the previous years, and apart from the. rearing competition, the calves were judged on dairy type, and demonstrations given by the judges at the various schools, and in this way the interest in and educational value of the competition were greatly increased.
