SPORTS GROUND FOR WAIROA.
BIG SCHEME BY COUNCIL
ALL SPOBTS INCLUDED
he need of sport is a recognised factor m the life of every eomftiunity, and the town of Wairoasshould soon be m the happy position of having a large and up-to-date recreation ground, on which there will be ample accommodation for all sections of sport. In the past the town has not been partieularlv well situated with regard to, its sports giounds, but thanks to the jirogressiveness of the Borough Council, and the energetic Mayor, Mr Corkill, this defectshould soon be remedied. A loan proposal is to be placed before the ratepayers next month, and if earned Wairoa will have, an area of eight acres at Lambton Square for use as a recreation ground. There is a possibility that two more acres can be acquired, in, which case all sections of sport could be accommodated on the one recreation ground. Speaking to a Herald representative, to the sub .l'ect, the Mayor of Wairoa, Mr Corkill, said that the need for some better provision for the sports of the town had long been lealised. The Council had gone thoroughly mto the question, and had decided that the best scheme for the town would be the laying out of a comprehensive recreation ground, which would be available for all classes of sport The scheme was rapidly nearing fruition, and next month the Council was going to the ratepayers to ask them to sanction a loan of £4300 for the purpose of laying out and improving the sports ground at Lambton Square, close to the centre of the town It the ratepayers carried this loan, and he had every confidence ,that thev would do so, the sporting fieeds of the town' would be supplied for many years to come Mr Corkill said that the Council had a reserve at Lambton bquare, which, together with a road reserve, gave them an, area, of ei«ht acres available for use. Opposite the new grounds was a police reserve of 24 acres, and it was hoped that this might .be acquired in exchange for a borough reserve of three acres on the Napier road. The borough would then have a 10-acre area for their sports ground. There would be plenty of room for football grounds, hockey grounds, and tennis, ..croquet and bowling lawns, and thus all the sporting activities of the town would proceed on the one ground. The scheme provides for the carrying out of a great many improvements, and eventually Wairoa should have a very beautiful recreation ground, and one entirely suitable for the needs of the district. Provision is already made for the erection of- a grandstand, which will be carried out on lines similar to those adopted by the Bugby Union in its stand at the Oval in Gisborne. The ground will also be extensively beautified by tree-planting. All the sports
bodies of Wairoa. are behind the present move, and there is every reason to believe that the loan will be carried by a substantial majority. The provision of a suitable recreation ground is but anther evidence of the progressiveness of the Wairoa community, and should it be carried to completion in the same manner as most of the other borough activities, it will be a ground worthy of the fine district which it will serve, r
