GOLF.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. BY CABLE—PHESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT MELBOURNE, Sept. 5. Play in the open golf championship of Australia is progressing at the Sandringham links in fine weather. There are heavy entries, which include several ex-champions. The opening rounds produced some keen contests. The contestants include Dr Kenneth Ross (New Zealand), whose chances of finishing among the first flight seem remote. MANAWATU LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.") PALMERSTON N., Sept. 5. The final of the Manawatu Ladies’ Golf Club championship was won by Miss R. E. Gambrill (Wellington), who defeated Miss G. Seifert (Manawatu), 3up and 2 to play. Miss Gambrill won this championship in 1920 and 1923. Miss Seifert is a promising player, this being her first year at golf. DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. AUCKLAND, Sept. 5. The New Zealand golf championship tournament opened at the Middlemore links to-day. The weather was overcast and a strong north-westerly wind troubled the players. Two rounds of the open championship were played, the best total being returned by Arthur Duncan (Wellington) and E. J. Moss (professional, Auckland), both 152. Duncan did the best single round, equalling the. course record of 71. The next best round was done by Moss (73). Both these players attracted large galleries. COMMENTS ON THE PLAY. After Duncan’s brilliant form in the morning, it- was confidently anticipated that he would hold his form .and end the day with a substantial lead. Curiously enough, however, the second nine holes in the afternoon his brilliant putting of the morning failed him. as will be remembered occurred to him at Wanganui last year against Goss in the final. His round totalled 81, the second nine taking 43. in the morning he was eight better than Moss, and in the afternoon Moss exactly reversed the position, going round in a brilliant 73. It will be interesting to see how these two shape to-day, for the contest appears likely, on present form, to rest between them. But there are several other first fligliters who may he equal to pulling up the seven or eight strokes necessary to bo ’.with the leaders. Kapi Tareha, Mclntosh and Macfarlaue. are six strokes away, H. B. Lusk, it. D. Wright, J. Goss, Butler and C. A. Seymour seven away. Ilorton. who won at Hamilton, and Shaw, who did so well last year, are each eight off the leaders. J. L. Black, the Lower Butt champion, who had the distinction last year of being the only player to break eighty in each of the four rounds, was evidently not quite on his game and just failed to break eighty each time yesterday. Ekstedt, the Manawatu champion, could not get going in the morning, but pulled himself up considerably with a fine 77. F. G. Hood was consistent, but not brilliant. Of the Taranaki ' players O’Callaghan, who often rises to the position in big company, was the best, getting twenty-second place with 164. Clements and Ritchie, of whom great things werfei expected, did no good. P. Grey, of New Plymouth, and j. Harold, of Wanganui, did only moderately, though the former was one of ten to bieak eighty ni the second round. Dale, of Eltham, who is a popular young player here and did very well at Hamilton, failed to get bettor than two rounds of 84. The Quin, brothers also placed only medium golf. I'rank and dames were even with 84 and 80 and 88 and 82. Indications last night were that today looked likely to he. wet and the course heavy. All who know the course will realise that rain on one portion of the course will quickly make

it very heavy and diilicult. Todays figures will be awaited with the keenest- interest. - Arrangements have been made vo- secure the twelve best scores, and these will be shown at the Star office and at Purser Bros., High Street.
