CANALS DISCUSSED. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 3. A telegram from San Jose says: R. G. Sitken, assistant-director of Lick Observatory, commenting on the markings of Mars as evidence of life, said that to be visible to astronomers on this earth the said markings would have to be 50 to 100 miles wide. Hence the notion that they were canals such as are built on this earth was absurd. 1
