** A cable message from Sydney records the death at Noumea of BrigadierGeneral Roth, aged 66 years, a prominent medical man, and a member of Sir Alexander Godley’s staff in Egypt and France. His widow is a Christchurch lady. The death occurred last week of Mr A. Croskell, one of the early settlers of Canterbury. Mr Croskell was born m Lincolnshire in 1838, and came to New Zealand in the ship Gertrude in 1863 and arrived at Auckland. He brought with him three prize ewes. Later he settled in Canterbury, where he spent the . remainder of his life being prominently connected with farming.
Mr J. J. Pilkington, District Coroner, who has resided at Ohakune for a number of years past, leaves shortly with Mrs Pilkington for Wanganui, where he will reside in future. Mr Pilkington, for a number of years, has been a member of the Wanganui Education Board and Wanganui Hospital Board.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Agricultural Association, a vote of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr J. D. Mitchell, of Manaia, who had been a keen member of the association. The chairman mentioned that the deceased gentleman had been a strong supporter of agricultural shows from one end of New Zealand to the other, not only as an exhibitor, but also in the capacity of judge.
The Palmerston North correspondent of the Wellington Post states that Mr Alfred Benjamin Cole, aged 67 years, who had been a resident of Palmerston North for over 20 years, died suddenly in the street late on Saturday afternoon. As he had been under medical attention an inquest will hot be necessary. He is survived by his wife and five sons and four daughters, one son being Mr C. H. Cole, of Normanby.
His Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) has accepted an invitation to be present at the annual ball of the New Plymouth Territorials on Tuesday, September 16. His Excellency and party will arrive at the ball after the New Plymouth Choral Society’s concert, which they will also attend. The Vice-Regal party, which will arrive in New Plymouth on Monday, September 15, and depart on Thursday/ September 18, will comprise Viscount Jellicoe, Her Excellency Lady Jellicoe, the Hen. Lucy Jellicoe, Lieut .-Commander Dove, A.D.C., and Captain A. R, W. Curtis, private secretary.
