POLICE COURT RECORDS. “WELL IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.” WOMEN HEADING THE LIST. One day last week Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., remarked to an old offender at the Magistrate’s Court, Auckland, when passing along a sentence of a month: “You are riminng very well in the championship. You have 104 convictions.” This does not mean that the offender had been fined or sentenced to imprisonment on 104 different occasions—a short term may have worked off several convictions (says the Auckland Star). Frequently persons are arraigned on two. three, or four charges arising out of one incident, and perhaps will be sentenced or fined on one charge only, a conviction being recorded on the others. In this way a person may compile a long list, but a point to remember is that the man or woman with the most convictions is not the worst criminal by any means, and it will be found that rarely is a person with a long list guilty of a very serious crime. The man who, the’ other day, was told he was running well in the championship wasn’t even in a position to qualify for the semi-finals, as so lar from being “well in the running for the championship” with 104 qonvictions, he is really amongst the “also rails.” The record, number of convictions in the Dominion is down to the credit, or rather discredit, of a woman whose indiscretions, or slips, have earned her 209 convictions. Quite a respectable (?) total. Although not known for certain, it is the opinion of those in a position to know all that women are also runinng second, third, and fourth 1 in the “championship,” each having passed the century mark Several males have over 100 convictions and are still “batting,” but the record of over 200 is likely to stand for a long time. Newcomers uo Hawera are cordially invited to join the “No-RubbingP Laundry Help Club. (Full particulars from vour grocer).—Advt.
