A rather amusing incident occurred to the Vice-Regal party while proceeding to Napier from Gisborne (says the Hawke’s Bay Tribune). Near Pukerino their car was stopped by a swagger, who asked for something to eat. To his surprise he was treated most sumptuously, and afterwards said that it was the best feed he had ever had. The kindness shown by His Excellency, said the wayfarer, was a striking contrast to that shown by many motorists. The fact that the captain of the Poverty Hay soccer team, E. Woodrow, is minus an arm, was not lost upon His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, when he was introduced prior to a match at Gisborne (states the Poverty Bay Herald). “You’re pretty game to play with a handicap like that.” said His Excellency. “May I ask how you lost your arm?” When informed - that the missing limb had been left at Messines. His Excellency remarked. “Well, all I can say is that you are very game, and a very fine sport.”
