BRAVERY AWARDS.
ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY. (BY, TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 1. AL a meeting cf the Court of Directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand, Sir Jas. Gunson forwarded a letter from one c-f t,he members of a rescue party at the Huntly.miue disaster in .June 1914, suggesting that the society shc.uld give awards in recognition of the bravery shown by. members of the rescue party. The> writer stated that a very snort time after the Rellbird disaster in New South Wales the rescuers had been recognised by the Royal Humane Society. The chairman said the constitution of tlie society did not allow them to deal with applications for awards in respect of acts of brav'eiw performed further hack than twelve months. It was decided to reply that the society regretted very deeply that owing to th-e lapse of time the constitution of the society would not oermit it to consider the case. • It was decided to make the following awards:— Framed certificate, to Reginald Norman Abbott, Telegraph Department. Napier, won on February 16, 1924, rescued Mr and Mrs McEachen from drowning off the Marine Parade, Napier. of commendation to Alfred William Steer, labourer, Palmerston North, who, on June 21, 1924, attempted to rescue Alfred-William Park from drowning in the Manawatu River.
