THE VEIL OF FATE.

HIDES GIRL’S MURDERER. , MELBOURNE, Aug. 13. ’’inhere has been no development in the Caulfield murder mystery, the victim of which was Irene Tuckerman. As each day passes the hopes of the public that the murderer will he brought to book are diminishing. Detectives, however, are still ivorking long hours, and are still gathering information in the hope that it will be valuable. Three men volunteered statements to the detectives last night. One of them told a story which inspired confidence in the course which the detectives are pursuing. For the first time the following story of the mysterious shooting of a dog owned by a resident of Crimea Street was obtained to-dav. Irene Tucker was fond of this dog, and the animal, a coursing greyhound, was friendly towards the girl. An interview with the owner gives rise to a new line of thought, which suggests that the dog possibly saw the murderer in the early hours of Sunday morning. “If he could speak he would be able to tell a sensational story,” the dog’s owner remarked to-day. The greyhound got out of its shed on Saturday night, and was not seen again till Monday, when it was found shot. “A funny thing about the dog,” the owner said, “was that it became angrv when it saw nnvone carrying a bag.”
