NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By Maecenas)
What is virtually the opening of the flat racing season will eventuate at Mar ton to-morrow, when the Ma.rton Jockey Club will hold their spring meeting. Waiotama, which at times has shown some pace, took .suddenly bad' on Sunday, and despite veterinary aid, died yesterday. The cause of death was stoppage. ' ■ Awake’s half-brother, Shut Eye, was a runner for the Opunake Scurry at the Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday, and although not 3 T et ready, he showed plenty of pace. After a number of failures, Seadown’s half-brother Wee Sandy, broke his maiden status bv winning the Scurry on Saturday. Weed Sandy will possibly be jumped later. On tlie concluding day of tbe last -Wellington ' meeting Guanace ran a good race, and if as well to-morrow should show up in the Hack Steeplechase.
Kuhio is on the. improve, and at the Canterbury meeting ran three good races, so if the little black fellow is saddled up at. Mart-on he is certain to show up. Alaric won easily at the EgrnontWanganiii Hunt Club meeting, hut in Brigadier Bill and Demand he will meet a pair to-morrow that may beat him at the weights. Mountain Signal is well seasoned, and at the recent Canterbury meeting ran a couple of good races, and a repetition of this form at, Mart on to-moa-row will find Mountain Signal “in the money.” At present Miss Mickey jumps too carefully and high, but with practice this mare should pay her way over the battens, far she is bred the right way ((Spalpeen—Lady Bibbers), and has pace.
At the home turn Gaillard was going sc. well in the Stratford Handicap on Saturday that success looked certain for him, hut over the last few chains, he weakened badl£, and his chance of running a. mile at Wanganui does not look bright. Halgina, and Reremoana are both looking very robust, and their race at New Plymouth on Saturday will: do this pair much good, and from now on both will ran well in engagements.
Prior to the North Taranaki Hunt Club’s meeting, Awake had been galling well, and his connections were very confident he would win on Saturday, but Gray isbriding with no luck, ond through getting “pocketed” on Awake a good chance was lost. The Banker has a great private reputation, and his win on Saturday was earned in businesslike style, and on his showing at New Plymouth he is at least a “possibility’! in the Avondale Guineas.
Roaming, which won the Hunters’ Hurdles on Saturday, gave a good display of jumping, and when seasoned will no doubt add further successes to this win. The sire of Roaming is Manchineal, who will be better known as the father of that good hurdler Nukumai, What a clever fencer old Te Toa is; the jumping of this gelding undoubtedly won him his second Hunt Club Cup on Saturday. P. Johnson deserves praise for the condition of Te Toa, and the old fellow battled out every inch of ground. In trying to go with Te Toa in the early stages of the Hunt Club Cup at New Plymouth on Saturday an excellent chance was thrown away with Mahia, which is* a useful hunter. The class at Marton to-morrow may be too good for Mahia. Prior to his racq on Saturday, Glengariff pulled away from his attendant; and in a wild career negotiated, some fences. He gave his knee a nasty knock, and lost some skin, and in consequence is now lame. Under these circumstances Glengariff ran a good race on Saturdav. Radial’s brother, Ruby Red, failed badly at New Plymouth on Saturday, and at present does' not look like being the same class as his older brother. As Trainer J. Brown has done a good deal with the gelding, and had him in good condition, his failure after having every opportunity was decidedly disappointing. The North Taranaki Hunt Club’s gathering on Saturday was a most successful meeting from all points of view. The owners were favoured By securing some good public “trials” for I backward horses. The general public [were provided with a good programme, and, some splendid racing was witnessed. The club, too, were rewarded for their efforts by the meeting being a great financial success. The Taranaki-owned Bonogue has shown pace at times and lias been working well, so he may show up at Marton to-morrow. The Gisborne filly Startle has most consistent performances, and. as she will be more seasoned than her opponents at Marton. Startle should be well supported.
