WANGANUI-WEST COAST RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
The following are the abridged minutes of annual general meeting held in the Wanganui Drill Hall, on Wednesday, August 20: — There were present: Lieut.-Col. R. Hughes (chairman), Lieut.-Col. Cunningham, Major Cade, Capts. Simmonds and Swan, Lieuts. Lilburn and Lovegrove, Dep.-Pres. Anderson, Riflemen Luxford, Hamilton, King, Clarke, Holmes, Patterson, Butler, and the secretary. ' Apologies for absence were received from Captains Wales and Morgan and Rifleman Hudson. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The annual report showed that the last meeting was voted a success by competitors generally. A special tribute of praise was given to Major R. Cade, Lieut. McAneny and Mr A. R. Somerville for their services as range officers, to Mr H. Bretherton for his services as trench officer, to Colonel R. Hughes as paymaster, and to Messrs H. V. Duigan and H. Cannan for their assistance in the secretary’s office. Deep regret was expressed at the tragic death of Mr H. V. Duigan, and at the loss of so valued a friend and supporter. The balance sheet showed the amount received from entries was £B3 13s 4d short of the expenses of the North Island championship meeting, but that this was made up by donations from sympathisers and from sundry other sources, so that the ultimate result of the year’s operations was a credit balance of a few pounds. Of the total income received, 77.54 per c-ent. was distributed in prize money, 8.54 per cent, in markers, 7.01 per cent, in administration, and 6.91 per cent, in preparation, of range and general expenses. The special thanks of the Association arc due to our officers and sympathisers for their liberal contributions in cash and trophies. Cash donations were received from Major-General Chaytor, Col. W. Representation of Affiliated Clubs on Executive. —As distance makes it practically impossible for affiliated clubs to have direct representation at meetings of the executive committee, it was decided to notify rifle clubs that they may nominate a local member of the executive to represent them or communicate direct with the secretary. HOME AND HOME MATCH,
TARANAKI LEADS THE WAY. *
At the annual general meeting of the Hawera Club the report of the New Zealand Home and Home Match was read. This showed that the Taranaki team had put up a phenomenal score, which was a. record for the Dominion. Eeaeh team consisted of 12 men, the ranges being 300, 500, 600 yards, seven shots at each range. The winning team was Taranaki, their score being 1177 for 12 men, with an average of 98 1-12 per man, a very fine effort. This team fired on the Patea range in ideal weather. Wellington was second with 1141, an average per man of 95 1-12. The firing,was done at Trentham, under the control of Lieut. P. Barcham, assisted by Lieut. W. J. Gibson as trench officer. Rangitikei, last year’s winner, was third, with 1129. This shoot was on the Bulls range. Several brilliant individual scores ■were recorded, the best effort being that of Captain C. Simmonds, of Wanganui, New Zealand champion, who notched 33 at 300, and finished his shoot with a possible at 500 and 600 yards, his grand total being 103 out of a possible 105. The next best scores were by G. H. Cross (Taranaki) and W. H. Ballinger (Wellington), 102 each; G. Taylor (New Plymouth), W. Kells (Palmerston North), 101; F. J. Soler (Wanganui) and D. Cadler (Patea), 100. Scores of 99 were secured by A. G. Robertson (Hawera), R. E. Hester and R. 11. Nicholl (Wellington). The previous year’s results were as follows:
