For some time past the bar trade in the Dunedin hotels has been somewhat slacker than usual (states the Star). The causes are not clear. Some persons suggest that the increase in recent years in the price of spirits is inducing men to buy by the bottle or the case and take their nips at home. Another explanation put forward is that a large percentage of our citizens are saving up to buy homes or release mortgages. A thrid ’explanation is that the winter unemployment has made economy compulsory. Nobody seems to imagine that the abstinence indicates a voluntary move towards no-license. The hotelkeepers evidently do not fear that fate, for many of them are spending larges urns of money in extending or elaborating their premises. Ideas have market value. We have been able to assist many inventors of simple devices into highly lucrative markets. Come and discuss your idea with us. The first step is to protect it against “pirates.”—Henry Hughes. Ltd.
