SEQUEL TO A STRIKE. . (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GREYMODTH, Aug. 29. Arising out of a stoppage at the State mines on June 11, when, following a dispute over a miner whose lamp was stopped, other men left the work, one hundred workers were to-day proceeded against by the Inspector of Awards for taking part in an. unlawful strike. They pleaded guilty, stating that the tactless attitude of an underviewer was responsible. It was mentioned that there was a long-standing grievance owing to the unsuitability of lamps, which should be electric instead of merely oil. A heavy penalty w r as not pressed. Each defendant was convicted and fined five shillings. LORD JELLICOE’S NEPHEW. WELLINGTON, Aug. 29. Herbert Vereker, an employee of the Eagle Oil Company, was shot dead on July 9 by bandits at Portrero, Vera Cruz. Vereker met his death, it is stated, because of his refusal to hand over a sum of money demanded by the bandits. He was a nephew of Lord Jellicoe, his mother being a sister of Lady Jellicoe. J

NORTH AUCKLAND MAIN TRUNK

DARGAVILLE, Aug. 29. A big tunnel on the Waiotira-Puke-huia section of the North Auckland Main Trunk railway system was pierced this afternon. This work was completed well up to schedule time, and will enable completion of the section to be pushed on much more rapidly. The next big work on the section will be the erection of a bridge over the Wairoa River, near Kirikopuni, the present end of the section, with which Dargaville is hoping to be linked up, and is now asking Parliament to authorise the work. N.Z. ACCOUNTANTS’ SOCIETY. WELLINGTON, Aug. 29. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Society • of Accountants a sin-plus was shown for the year of £734, and the accumulated funds now stand at .■£•1901. The benevolent fund represents £2240 of the capital, with £336 to the credit of income. Messrs. Griffin (Wellington) and Thomson (Auckland) were elected to the vacancies on the council and Mr. W. E. Rest (Christchurch) was elected president.
