A Gazette notice states that Captain D. E. Bremner, M.C., of Hawera; has been promoted to the rank of major.
Mr J. J. Meldon stated vesterdav to a Witness reporter that he did not intend to seek re-election to the Town Board. Mr Meldon has put, in 18 years on the Board.
The death of Mr Henry William Massingham, a well-known London journalist, aged 64, 'is announeed in a London cablegram. Deceased was for many years connected with the Daily Chronicle, of which lie was at one time editor, but since 1907 lie. has been editor of the Nation.
Second-Lieutenant J. Leggat has been transferred to' the Ist (Cadet) Battalion, Taranaki Regiment, from the Auckland Regiment. Second-Lieutenant H. H. Skelton, of the Ist (Cadet) Battalion, Taranaki Regiment, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
The death occured at Auckland recently of Mr. John Hamilton Scott, at one time on the commercial staff of the Dominion for several- years. The deceased, who was a native of Ireland was about 80 years of age. He was educated at Dublin College. Mr. W. A. Collins, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, met with rather a painful accident on Wednesday. He was in the act of cranking his car, when the engine back-fired, . the cranking handle striking him on the forehead, inflicting a nasty wound which necessitated several stitches'being inserted in it.
Mr W. M. Singleton-, director of the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture, and Mr T. C. Brash, secretary to the New Zealand Dairy Control Board, left Wellington to-day for New Plymouth, in order to attend a meeting of dairy farmers at Hawera on Monday, when the question of butter and cheese grading is to be discussed.
It is expected that Lord and Lady Jellicoe will be leaving New Zealand towards the end of November on their “t«rn to England. Their departure he followed by an interregnum of about six weeks, during which the Lhiet Justice (Sir Robert Stout) will act as Administrator. This interregnum is provided for constitutionally, it not being the custom for a new Gover-nor-General to land in the country before his predecessor departs. Mr and Mrs F. T.
