HAWERA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawera School Committee was held in the school last night, when there were present: Messrs. .J. W. Harding (chairman), Brough, C'atran, O'xbrow, Hurrell, Goring, Westwood and Clement. An apology for absence was received from Mr. RoiVe.
The headmaster (Mr. F. A. Bates) reported, inter alia, that the attendance for the past month had averaged 650, with the present roll number at 702. One case of diphtheria had occurred amongst the children during the month. The inspector’s report, after having made his annual 'inspection, had been quite favourable to the staff. The improvements, in the school and grounds, which were' being carried out by the committee, were very much appreciated by both the staff and pupils. Mrs. Corcoran had resigned her position ,as eighth assistant, and her place would be taken by Mrs. Lee, who was to act as relieving teacher' until January 31. next. Miss Bourke was returning after the holidays. The report was adopted and a resolution was passed congratulating the teachers and scholars on the success met with at the recent musical and elocutionary competitions. Mr. Woolliams, the school caretaker, waited on the meeting in connection with his new schedule' of duties, which ho considered excessive. He would not have minded the extra work being allotted him bad lie been given an increase in salary. This, had not been done. Mr. Woolliams then proceeded to detail yhe extra work given him, and later retired, while the committee discussed in committee the advisability or otherwise of revising the schedule of duties and the salary. Mr. Woolliams later returned and was advised that the committee had decided that the schedule of duties would remain unaltered, and the question of salary would he reierred to a sub-committee'.
The Soulli Taranaki School Commitfees’ Association wrote stating that the committee was required to nominate one or more members of any committee in the Hawera group for the purpose of selecting representatives on the executive of the association for next year. The' secretary mentioned that Messrs. Harding and Brough had been nominated.
The secretary of the Taranaki Education Board advised that he had paid to the credit of the school the sum of £216 4s 3d, being the amount of the department’s subsidy towards various works and ground improvements. The chairman said this was very satisfactory. The subsidy was another instalment of the £I2OO the committee wanted, so that there was only another £4OO to be obtained before the whole of the £f for £1 subsidy was obtained.
