THE POPULATION PROBLEM
SLEEPING SICKNESS

Received Aug. 29, 11.35 a.m. TOKIO, Aug. 28. The Government has appointed a special emigration commission, of which the Foreign Minister is head, to study the problem basically, in view of the increase in population,> which is in excess 500,000 annually. The commission will investigate the possibilities of more intensive cultivation in Japan; also the development of present waste lands in kokkaids. Sleeping sickness continues to spread, the Health Department reporting that 1100 cases are now on the island of Shikoku, with several hundred more on the main island. Physicians report that 70 per cent of those who died were lie tween 60 and 70 years of age, and only 10 per cent were under 20.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
