One of the most disastrous tussock fires experienced in Otago for some years swept the Mount' Royal estate and surrounding districts to-day,- travelling at the rate of. three miles in ten minutes in a heavy .westerly wind. Fires were started yesterday behind Maikouaiti for the purpose of removing tussock, but’ a heavy "wind sprang up suddenly and the flames were soon out of control slid penetrating the innumerable gullies running in all directions. 'I here were several narrow escapes from being cut off 'fey the flames and a great deal of stock was lost. Mount Royal was cut up only recently and a number of new settlers suffered keenly. J. Preston and Aitchcson lost- approximately five hundied sheep each, hut. definite- figures cannot bo obtained until a muster is taken.
