LONDN WHEAT CARGOES.

CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 26

The potato market has slumped a further stage. The Wingatui on Saturday night took a record shipment, totalling from the three ports of Oamaru, Timaru and Lyttelton, between 16,000 and 17,000 sacks. The Lyttelton proportion was close on 9000 sacks. A good number of these potatoes are on consignment, and are the subject of low quotations from Auckland. The shipment will land on a bare market, but apparently it will be ample to meet the needs until the arrival of the Kawatiri from Melbourne about September 7. Farmers rushed in supplies whilst the going was good. To-day, on truck, values are about £4 a ton, the week’s operations lifting a good few potatoes from the country, and it is believed that the quantities held are in very few cases large enough to cause the holders worry.

Merchants say that the present is the quietest period in the trade for a long time, potatoes being about the only product they are. dealing with. Oats are not so firm, and are quoted at 5s lOd f.o.b. Chaff is firm at £6 15s to £7 to farmers. The inquiry for seeds is small.

The Bank of New Zealand produce department has received the following advice from its London office, under date August 22: Butter quiet at 206 s per cwt., exceptional up to 210 s. Cheese quiet; white 94s to 965, coloured 92s to 945. Frozen meat: The market for wethers is inclined to l>e firmer. The market for ewes is quiet, but unchanged. The lamb market has improved, owing to short supplies. No quotations for heel.
