JUDGE’S COMMENTS

TO-DAY’S RESULTS

The competitions were continued this morning and afternoon and kept the audience keenly interested throughout. The judges had a. busy time, and in many cases had some difficulty in placing the winners.

Last night the Opera House was nearly filled with an interested and enthusiastic audience, while to-day there has been a. satisfactory attendance. To-night will be specially interesting, and it is expected that the house will be filled to overflowing. There will be a lot of good work of different- styles to hear.

The winner of the impromptu speech last night is a student of the Uaweva Technical High School. The judge said he had “an easy manner, very good matter, and articidation fairly good. ’ He also secured second award m the class for boy’s song, under 18. JUDGE’S DEMARKS ON SUCCESSFUL COMPETITORS. Contralto Solo (open). U;t,— .Promising quality, good Italian diction, nice reposeful rendering. 2nd.—Nice free produetionr' good understanding of .song, a shade sharp at times, enunciation excellent pleasing rendition. Girl’s Song (under 14). Rt. —\ oice promising, enunciation quite refreshing after others, pitch and rhythm good, also interpretation. Hardly so good in recall at night. 2nd. —Voice good quality, good interpretative ideas, lost pitch in middle, occasionally weak in chromatic .passages, sang a little slowly, words good.

Jrd. —Breath short and noisy, promising voice, enunciation good, phrasing poor.

Boy’s Song (under IS)

Ist.—Good quality, musical ideas, top note uncertain, good general rendering, and pleasing performance. 2nd.—Voice quality fair, a flit-tle nasal at times, hardly sustained sometimes, pitch good, rather poor song to choose.

3rd. —Tone sweet, tempo good, enunciation poor, many words being lost, musical idea quite good. . ' Choirs (under 18).

Ist. Sopranos clear and sweet, altos hard, and forcing, no- blend, runs laboured and blurred, very fair general rendering. &

~nd.—Clipped time “at whose bright presence, ’ a little ragged at times, rather mournful sometimes, good general tone. .It may be added that the .ludge placed the second only two marks behind the winner—95, as against 97, out of a. maximum of 150. Choirs (under 14).

Ist.—Just a shade fast, spirited rendering:, nice attack and release altos a little flat at night. (The recall resulted in two marks being deducted). 2nd. —Altos dull, nice tone in sopranos. careful rendering, more colour than the other Manaia choir, better at night. (The recall resulted in a. gain of four marks).

TO-NIGHT

This will he the closing session of the competitions, and in addition to tlm classes for baritone and bass solo, test recital for ladies (Portia’s Speech on Mercy), and humorous recitation for men, there will be the winners for piano solo, men’s test recital, baritone or bass solo, recalls for boy’s sonogirl s song, recitation (under i.B), tenor polo, and soprano solo.
