RAWHITIROA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Our hall might easily he mistaken for a new building, so spick and span is it after its renovation and fresh coat of paint. On Tuesday night, the occasion of the footballers’ ball, it was more than well filled, there being scarcely room for all who wished to dance. The ladies had an unusually good time, the gentlemen having fulfilled all requirements in the way of decorating the hall and providing an excellent supper. Much amusement was caused when Mr F. Silver appeared on the stage with an immense “cup,” saying that when Lord Ranfurly’s term as Governor had expired lie' had left a shield to he competed tor every year. Lord Jellieoe, however, had preferred to give a cup, and this he had the pleasure of presenting to the winning Rawhitiroa team. Amid hearty laughter Mr H. McDonald , as captain, suitably replied and accepted it. Dancing continued till 2 a.m., Mr Wallace Major providing excellent music and Mrs 13. Johnson, Miss L. McDonald, and others contributing extras. The entwined, colours of the two local football teams made a prettv decoration.
The unique “cup” was not held by the team long, ns on Saturday the It Ith am thirds, who bad challenged them for it. defeated Rawhitiroa. by 21 points to nil, and carried it off. The trophy has been on view, in Mr A. Ware’s mart.
The schoolboys were more fortunate the same afternoon, winning their match against Mangamingi by 8 points to 6. The school is closed for the fortnight’s spring holidays. and most favourable weather prevails.
