SEASIDE CLUB. A general meeting of the Waimate Plains Seaside Club was held in the Manaia Town Hall on Friday night. There was a very large attendance. Mi 1 P. F. Hammonds occupied the chair. Miss Lewin gave a full report on the canvassing re the supper for the novelty ball which is to be held on September 3. Strong committees have been set up in connection with the ball, and no doubt the public will be well catered for. • ! It was decided to opeii an account in the Bank of New Zealand, the chairman and treasurer to sign cheques. Mr A. H. Christie Kindly donated £5 towards the Seaside Society. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Chritsie for his generous gift. Mr A. H. Christie was duly elected patron of the Seaside Club. i A good deal of business was transacted during the evening in'connection with the novelty ball. All arrangements were made for dooir-keeper’s office.
The canvassing of the town and district was left in the hands of Miss Lewin (secretary) with power to add. Mr Hammonds kindly promised his car, also Mr J. Silvester, to the canvassers, their kind offer being very much appreciated. \ The matter of decorations for the stage and hall was left in the hands of the. gentlemen’s committee. The following donations were also received: £2 5s from Colliers’ farewell social; Waimate West County Council, timber valued £3 3s; Mr Hammonds, £1; J. Silvester, wire cable for swing bridge, value £4; Mr A. J. Hansen, wire value £1; Mr Sprackett, 10s.
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all donors for t-hein* generous gifts. The ball, which is to be held on September 3, is for the building of dressing sheds at Kaupokonui beach. Last summer there were as many as 150 bathers —men, women and children —bathing at the same time. There was no place for anyone to undress and dress, the bathers having to dodge ill behind flax bushes and rocks, leaving their clothes scattered round the beach. The swimming pool at the mouth of the Kaupokonui river is considered one of the safest and nicest bathing places along the coast. Besides, it is a very fair beach for surf-bathing. The comhalve received an intimation that there is a strip of Crown' waste land between the river and Kaupokonui Road which leads right up to the beach. This is where the committee intend erecting the batching sheds, and it is a good place fcxr campers. The committee have sufficient material to erect a swing bridge over the Kaupo konui river. This is also a- long-felt want, as it will enable the visitors to cross over to the Otakeho beach. The young ladies who started the movement of erecting bathing sheds and lifesaving apparatus are to be heartily congratulated, as this cause is indeed urgent and a necessity, not only to the citizens of Manaia, but for the whole district, and no doubt the people will give this movement their hearty support. PADDY’S MARKET.
There was very good business done for the Paddy’s market held in aid of the sports queen on Saturday. The guessing of the weight of the two dressed geese was won by Mrs J. J. Hodgson, the weight being lollis 10-4OZS, Mrs Hodgson guessing 16lbs.
