In© Irish Free State police are investigating big turf swindles wherein bets were telegraphed from after the results had been wirelessed from an English racecourse. It is believed that this is the first time wireless has been used for such a purpose. Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. USE OF BEAM SYSTEM. Received Aug. 25, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, Aug. .24the Admiralty is unwilling to disclose the experts’ reports on the beam system of wireless, but state unofficially that if experience proves it inoperative in the daylight it will obviously be relatively* valueless compared with super-power stations which are operative for the whole 24 hours. Marconi informed the Australian Press Association that the beam system was already operative throughout daylight, although restricted in capacity. Nevertheless “day ringes had already proved reliable and not inconsiderable.” The beam system was constantly improves, particularly when the sun was at low altitude, and they are hopeful in % . near future to give a continuously efficient, daytime service, even when s s, n . high altitudes.—Aus.A.Z.
