How a leading Labourite financially embarrassed deserted his wife and child, pretended to commit suicide, and then attempted to abscond with a married woman to Australia, was related during the bankruptcy examination of William Jakeman, ex-Labour member for Dudley Council. Jakeman admitted borrowing £IOOO. which he lost in building houses. "When convinced of his losses lie ulaced a quantity of clothing on the'river bank at Worcester, and then booked passages to Australia for himself and the woman as man and wife, but was arrested on the eve of the steamer’s departure.— Aus.-N.Z.
