THEFT FROM BANK.

TRIAL OE TELLER. THE MAN WITH THE KEYS. BY CABLE—PRESS ABBOCIATION—COPYRIGHT MELBOURNE, Aug. 21. The hearing has commenced at the Police Court of a charge of the theft of £522 against Alfred William ChitVtock, teller at the Canterbury branch of the Commercial Bank. Detective • Clugston gave evidence that Chittock had the keys of the safe. The manager of the bank (Mr. Morgan) repeated the facts of the robbery. At the .time ofl the ocaurrence, he t' fated, Chittock had the keys of the afe, but could not open it without others being in a position to assist. A doctor gave evidence that it was possible that both Chittock’s wounds could have been inflicted in a struggle with an armed man. Chittock was committed for trial.

When he arrived in the morning at the bank the manager (Mr. Morgan) found the telephone out of order, and a few minutes later a neighbouring shopkeeper told him he was wanted by the head office on the shop telephone. When Morgan left to go to the ’phone, the teller ;(W. Chittock. entered the hank, ' and afterwards stated, that lie was confronted by an armed man, who told' him not to move or he would he shot. It yas stated that a struggle ensued between Chittock and the robber, and during the course of a desperate struggle Chittock was wounded in the left hand and the left foot, being forced to release his hold on the intruder, who escaped with a roll of notes. As a sequel to the affair Chittock was arrested and charged with the theft.
