Thq North Auckland team arrives at Hawera to-night. The visitors are reported to be in good form, and their calibre can be estimated by the fact that they were defeated by Auckland, one of the strongest provincial teams, bv only 11 points to 8. Yesterday North Auckland played a drawn game with King Country, and it is expected that these two games will have developed the visitors’ team work, so that they should make Saturday’s match one in which the issue will be fought out to the last minute. The Bush Union won the double event against the Dannevirke Rugby representatives to-day. winning the senior game by 13 points to 12 and the junior game by 14 to 5. In the former contest Dannevirke had the better of the game throughout and were unlucky to lose. Bush scoring and converting the winning try in the lad five minutes of a strenuous game. In a representative Riugby match today. King Country and North Auckland drew with nine points each.' MOASOAR CUP CHALLENGE. PALMERSTON NOT COMING. According to the Manawatu Daily Times Mr. J. Murray (rector of the Palmerston North Boys’ Hk>h School) stated on Tuesday that the school would not plav its challemre to New Plymouth for the Moascar Cup. The reason given was that the date (August 28) suggested by him was not available, owing to the New Plymouth boys being on tour, they having to play Nelson College on that dav. The holders suggested September 13. but this did not meet- with the school's arrangements, so the match is “off.’’ TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOLS MATCHES. TWO WINS FOR HAWERA. In the matches between the Hawera Tech idea I High School and the Stratford High School on the show grounds yesionlay afternoon Hawera gained the victory in each, instance. The A game resulted in a win by 27 to nil and the Tt game by VI to 9. The B game was fairly even, the final score of 11 points to 9 in favour of Hawera being a good indication of the comparative strength of the two teams. From the kick off Stratford invaded the Red’s territory, and within a few minutes a scrum close to the line resulted. The half. Kilpatrick, got the ball and sent out. a long pass to the winger, Clark, who got across in the corner and scored. Thomas’ kick failed. The Hawera- forwards got away, and a dribbling rush brought play to the mouth of the Stratford .goal, but a quick pick up by Sullivan allowed that player to get away and score in the corner. Thomas’ kick again failed. Play was in Stratford's twenty-five when G. Bishop intercepted a pass, and making off with the ball under his arm scored under the goal. M. Burke’s kick failed. M. McDonnell picked up from a forward rush and evened matters by scoring a few yards from the side of the goal. Bourkc put Hawera in the lead by converting. Stratford had the best of the play that followed, but the spell dosed without further score.
When the second spell opened Hawora assumed the offensive, but overkicking allowed Stratford to force. Tlie Reds were soon throwing the ball about again, and a nice piece of passim" resulted in Gower scoring. Burke’s kick failed. .Hawera continued to press, and Stratford forced twice in the space of a couple of minutes. Stratford worked down the touch-line, and from a throw-in a couple of yard* iron) the corner' C. Ford scored. Thomas’ kick failed. The homo A team proved to be much too good for their opponents. At the outset Hawera pressed, and the fullhack in clearing sent the ball out a couple of yards from the touch-line. Hawera rushed over and Stratford were obliged to force. Shortly afterwards lrom a throw-in close to the corner tine ball was passed down the lino of hacks to Nicholas, who scored beside the posts. lord 0. Play ended shortly afterwards without further score. At the conclusion of the matches the visiting teams were entertained at afternoon tea at the school. A very dainty spread was made by the home science students under Miss Earl. The play of the local teams was distinctly creditable, the backs getting in a number of very good passing rushes and the lorwards scrumming well and showing a lot of dash in the loose. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. SOUTH AUCKLAND DEFEATS CHINA. HAMILTON, Aug. 20. liie touring team of' Association footballers from the Giinese Universities played South Auckland to-dav in glorious weather before an attendance ol offfit). The ground was uneven but in good condition for a fast game. The Giinese team was not- at full strength, as four of their regular players were down for the test on Saturday. South Auckland won bv three goals to nil. The team leaves to-night for Wellington. TRY-OUT FOR TEST TEAM. NEW ZEALANDERS DISAPPOINTING. PALMERSTON N., Aug. 20 A one goal tie was the result of a Soccer match to-day between the Aew Zealand eleven to meet the Chinese in the second test on Saturday and the Wellington provincial team.
