LADIES’ HOCKEY.
TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIP. SECURED- BY STRATFORD T.H.S. The play off for the championship produced a. very line contest between Stratford T.H.S. and Hawera- Ramblers, the play being of a. very high standard, in the first spell Stratford had much the better of the game, but after half-time play was much more even, and .spectators were enthusiastic in their applause for the good play on both sides. The result was a. win for Stratford by five goals to- nil. The goals scored by Stratford were made oy Miss . It. -McTvor (3 ), and Miss J. McCullough (2). The best players for Hawera were Miss Hoddinott and Miss X. Reid. The referees wei;o Messrs N. 0. Hubert (of Hawera) ar.d K. Pennington (of JEltham). After the match the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the school, when opportunity was taken to Present the shield to Miss Gernhoefer, captain of the S.T.H.S. team. In making the presentation, Mr If. C. Johnson, president of the Taranaki Da-dies’ Hockey Association and coach of the S.T.H.S. team, heartily congratulated the winners upon their fine performance, and upon the fact that they retained the shield so brilliantly won last year. During the two full seasons tin: school team had never suffered n defeat, which he ventured to say was a unique performance. {Ape pi arise). • Mr N. 0. Fibbert. coach of t/isi Hawera. team, paid a very high tribute; cn the playing of the school team and their meritorious record. Stratford and Hawera clubs had a decided advantage over the New Plymouth clubs in that they were fortunate in having men as coaches who also took a- keen interest in tire game. A pleasant- afternoon was concluded with cheers for both teams.
