The Minor Counties in their first hip. mgs against South Africa realised 196. Coldham made 40, and Pegler took five wickets for 46. The South Africans in their first innings had made 103 for nine when stumps were drawn. COUNTIES MATCHES, LONDON, Aug. 20. Essex in their first innings made 204 against Hampshire, whose first innings realised 205. No second innings was played. ' , ‘ ' Gloucester drew with Kent. Freeman took five wickets for 69. Yorkshire heat Leicester. Worcester drew with Northants. The Somerset-Surrey match was abandoned when Surrey had made 235 for eight wickets. The W arw'ick-Lancashire match was abandoned when the latter had made 228 for four wickets (Tvldeslev 100). Derby (Jackson 103) drew with Notts (Carr 101, G Gunn 55). Heath took five wickets for 54. Whysall, who has been selected as second wicketkeeper, has up to the present been outstanding as a Notts batsman, and had really not donned the gloves. The first hint of the pos-' sibility of his selection in that capacity was his test, appearance behind the stumps against Derbyshire to-day. TENNIS. PLAY IN AMERICA. WIN FOR. AUSTRALIANS. Received Aug. 21, 12.20 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 20. Patterson and o‘Hara Wood heat Washburn and Williams, 6—l, 4 —6, 6—3, 3—6, 6—o. In the lirst set the Americans were decidedly off form, while the Australians were perfect with their overhead strokes and accurate in pace and length. In the second set the games went with the service until Patterson lost the fifth. The Americans led, 3—2. Williams lost the service in the sixth and Wood in the seventh. The Americans won the set, Williams scoring with his famous cross-court placements-. In the third set Patterson’s serving and overhead smashing were deadly. By breaking through Patterson’s sendee in the fourth set the Americans created a. 5 —3 lead, and won the set. For the fifth set an extremely cold wind made the conditions unfavourable. The Australians fought hard to a 4—o load, and then Patterson won the fifth with overhead placements. Washburn lost the service in the sixth.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
GOLF N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. ALTERATION OF DRAW. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. At a special meeting of the council of the New Zealand Golf Association, it was resolved to somewhat alter the method of the draw for the open championship and qualifying rounds for the amateur championship as previously decided upon, and the method now decided upon by the council is as follows:—All amateur competitors in the open championship with national handicaps of seven or under shall he drawn with professionals as to partners, and the order of starting ami started first. The remaining amateur competitors of seven awl umler (if any) are to he, drawn together, and started next. The remainder of the competitors will ho drawn in one class as to partners and the order of starting. National handicaps for all those who had made application were fixed at this meeting, and have all been advised to the Auckland Golf Club. Laicst reports, from Auckland are that there is every prospect of the emu-so being in first-class order when the tournament commences on Friday, September 5. In order to ensure the final preparation of the course the committee of the Auckland Golf Club decided to positively close the course for play from 1 p.m. on Thursday before the opening championship commences. so that the greens and fairv ays snould be in excellent order for the first two rounds on the Friday.
