KAPONGA TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Kaponga Town Board was held on Tuesday evening. There were present: Commissioners W. G. Cran (chair), C. E. Betts, It. A Law, J. Dawson, L. Shepherd, and Messrs A. E. Moss (engineer) and. G. P. Cook (clerk). REPORTS. Reports as under were adopted. The electrical engineer (Mr. A. E. Moss) reported as rollows: -‘The line to the eastern boundary has been completed and services installed at Messrs Brown's and Perry’s sheds. A short line to serve Mr. W. O’Neiil’s milkingshed has also been completed. {Seven new motors have been connected, malting the total to date 5(5. This completes the payable portion of the area. Hiie milking load is now more than half on in mornings and evenings.” Authority was given to instal an extra street light on the Eltham Road in the vicinity of the Catholic church. The recommendation that the light at the lire brigade station be placed outside the building was held over for future consideration. Referring to the pipe line, the engineer intimated that the whole of the broken portion, had been uncovered, it was evident that the concrete used in the original construction was of very poor quality. The foreman (Mr. A. Melville) reported that, as instructed, water-tables were being cleared fortnightly; breaks in footpaths on the Manaia and Eltham Hoads in the central portion of the town had been sanded and tamped: pot holes on stock road west had been idled in and water-tables cleaned, the same being done on the Manaia Road ; loose soil had been removed from Kiwi Street. Work at present being done on the eastern boundary would be completed in a day or two. . Culverts had Been constructed on the Eltham Rond, the pipes being left uncemented until the kerbing is put down. He advised that the work on the park trade he proceeded with in order to allow of a good take of grass. Necessary labour could he secured in conjunction with the sports club. An application received from the foreman for four days’ leave of absence was not granted. The following recommendations of the Works Committee covering the work for the month were adopted: Suitable attention to a number of small holes I in the roadsides on the Eltham and Manaia Roads : the town clerk to com-

numicate with all property holders on the Upper Manaia. Road, requesting that all drains under the footpaths be opened to allow storm water to pass through; that Mrs. A. E. Tindle be directed to instal such a drain; that the .Kaponga Dairy Company be also so directed, at the entrance formerly used by carts leaving the factory, and now the entrance to the section used for building residences; that, the foreman, in accordance with the recommendation given, proceed with the cleansing of the town footpaths and streets, commencing with the still unfinished Eltham Road east; that further additional labour be employed to cut the hedge the east side "of Victoria Park, on the south side of Victoria Park, and also the trees surrounding the cemetery, reducing the height of same as much as the life of the trees will allow; that' the entrance to the cemetery be thoroughly cleaned, the grass to be cut and the bushes trimmed, the fern removed, weeds eradicated from the path, the edges cleanly outlined and the surface put in order. CONTRAVENTION OF BY-LAWS. Arising out of an inquiry received from the foreman concerning the prosecution of- motorists travelling on the wrong side of the sign at the intersection of the Manaia and Eltham Roads, and his further recommendation that warning he issued to motorists who fail Lo heed traffic notices, members of the board complained that local motorists had I icon guilty of travelling across,-the intersection mentioned at excessive speeds. The chairman pointed out that those practices were in defiance of the bylaws. The offenders were liable to prosecution, and if such contravention of its by-laws were continued the board would be obliged to take legal action against defaulters.
