CANTERBURY MARKETS. (UY TELEGRAPH —CRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 19. Business has commenced to settle down after last week’s festivities. Potatoes have taken another jump. Auckland merchants have been left in the lurch by the cancellation of Victorian sailings and a period of real shortage has set in. Apparently no provision was made for Canterbury supplies in case of such a happening, and the bare boards in the northern city have caused 1 a very brisk demand for prompt deliveries from here. The Xa-vua is to sail to-night with a full cargo of between 61)00 and 7000 sacks, and the AVingatui. due to sail on Friday, is also booked up. It is understood the first Australian vessel with potatoes, the Kawatiri, is due to leave Melbourne on September 2, so that until the second week in September the northern demand will have to be met entirely by Canterbury potatoes. The Kawatiri is bringing over 1000 tons. The remarkable feature locally is that the actual potatoes are not easy to secure for this week’s boats, confident sellers of a week or two ago failing to deliver in a number of cases. Naturally values have jumped during the week, and to-day £5 10s on trucks has been paid to farmers, whilst £7 f.o.b. sacks in has been paid between merchants for deliveries for this week’s vessels. Oats are scarcely so firm, hut 6s Id has been paid for B grade Cartons. Chaff is in sound demand, and from £6 15s to £7 is offering to fanners bn trucks. The seed market is lifeless.
